This CD was playing in Sofie’s Bar in Leith on Saturday night. It’s a compilation of some of the most bizarre cover versions you’ve ever heard, mixed by Tom Middleton and is highly recommended.

Scratch competition. Best weird cover that’s better than the original. My opening gambit: ‘Helden’ by der scheitel. Knocks spots off Bowie’s Berlin tribute. While being awful.

Heh. Good idea, although my mind has instantly gone blank. I suspect covers that are both weird and better than the original are going to be thin on the ground. I’m a big fan of Alien Ant Farm’s metal version of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal, but maybe that isn’t weird enough. Of course, Easy Star Dub Star’s Dub Side of the Moon, a dub reggae version of Dark Side of the Moon (the whole album!) is incredible, and slightly weird, but I’m not sure it’s better than the original.

No post on weird covers would be complete without an Eilert Lilarm mention, a favourite of John Peel. Definitely a winner in the ’sounds least like the original’ category. http://eilertpilarm.to/
